Free Flow: A Gaze on Limnos Island.

Christos Dimitriou

Christos Dimitriou dislikes forms or anything that defines and potentially restricts the flow, the energy. This is clearly identified in every photographic series based on and inspired by his island, Limnos, specifically its northeastern edge. And how could it be otherwise?

Christos Dimitriou’s relationship with the island is perhaps fragmentary if judged in terms of a calendar or strict locality. This alone serves as an amazing challenge. Balancing with the title of “local,” he records the island as he experiences it, as he encounters it, sometimes unexpectedly, sometimes perfectly arranged, almost directed. Whether it’s mountains of seaweed on the island’s beaches, the light caressing the gentle mountainous masses, the vastness of the countryside interrupted by clusters and well-trodden paths, or the blinding white at Alyki and the liberating flow of sand at Amm’des, or finally, human presence-absence. You don’t need to see it to feel it; it’s there, refined, sweet, gentle, moving. It doesn’t impose itself, but coexists with respect and often in awe for the natural elements: light, air, earth, water.

The flow exists everywhere, overflowing and ultimately becoming a caress from a beloved hand, a way to live, to see, to breathe in his/your homeland.
